Leverage a New Identity: Part IV, Clear Direction, Structure, and Order

Dec 06, 2024

Transitions are often challenging, particularly for women letting go of their corporate identity either voluntarily or involuntarily. Yet, by identifying, valuing, and leveraging our unique strengths, these challenges can become life-changing growth opportunities.

A valuable tool to facilitate this transformation is the RIASEC model—a framework often used to align personality types with compatible career paths. However, the power of this framework is in the ability to help us better understand ourselves, our value, and our potential. I have written about this model with a focus on particular categories in previous blogs in this "Leverage a New Identity" series:
Part I, Overcome Feelings of Identity and Status Loss
Part II, Cultivate Your Post-Corporate Social Network
Part III, Liberate Your Creativity After Corporate Life

This blog, Part IV, Clear Direction, Structure, and Order continues to explore the RIASEC model, with a focus on the “C” for Conventional, Procedural Organizers. You’ll learn how to leverage these strengths to build a new identity, successfully lead during transitions, and elevate your life and work.

Understanding the RIASEC Model
The RIASEC model—developed by psychologist John L. Holland—maps out six types that describe workplace preferences and strengths. Each letter represents a broad category within the model:

R (Realistic): Practical doers who prefer hands-on tasks. They thrive post-corporate if they can continue to being hands-on.
I (Investigative): Logical thinkers who excel at analysis and research. They are happy to continue to learn and deepen their knowledge - especially in an area of particular interest.
A (Artistic): Creative individuals who thrive on self-expression and imagination. They want to direct their post-corporate energy to creative pursuits and leave a mark on the world.
S (Social): Helpers who find fulfillment in coaching, teaching, or serving others. They thrive post-corporate when they can continue to connect, but perhaps with less emotional investment.
E (Enterprising): Leaders who are action-oriented and excel in motivating others. Post-corporate, they are vulnerable to the loss of identity, but thrive when engaged in professional activities or where their leadership is most valued.
C (Conventional): Detail-oriented organizers who shine in systems, procedures, and routines. Post-corporate, they are in their element in planning and organizing a smooth transition and even exploring uncharted pursuits.

This RIASEC framework not only helps you gain a deeper understanding of your personal preferences but also highlights the environments where you are most likely to thrive and gives you a new appreciation of your value and worth. For a woman executive, it serves as a powerful tool, offering clarity on her strengths and empowering her to step confidently into her potential as she remasters her life and work.

The best part? The model is equally valuable during transitions—such as leaving the corporate or business world—by helping you focus on what will bring fulfillment and purpose in the next chapter of life that may or may not involve a career move.

Our extensive experience in the corporate sector has allowed us to refine our core strengths while expanding our expertise to include a wide range of complementary skills. Personally, I’ve identified one dominant strength that defines my foundation, while cultivating two additional key areas to diversify my opportunities for both personal and professional growth.

This holistic approach provides a sense of stability and purpose, softening the transition from the structured world of corporate life to a more flexible, self-defined path. It allows for an efficient and graceful transition while minimizing both financial and emotional strain as we search for what's next.

Leveraging the 'C' in RIASEC for Self-leadership Success
What Does It Mean to Be a Conventional Organizer?
Conventional individuals are known for being systematic, reliable, and highly efficient. They thrive in organizing information, ensuring compliance, and implementing processes—skills that are often overlooked and undervalued in fast-paced executive settings. Yet, for women executives who identify as a "C" in the RIASEC framework, these qualities are their true superpower.

For women transitioning out of corporate careers, these strengths often lead to newfound joy, purpose, and self-fulfillment. Whether it's decluttering spaces, organizing physical and digital photo collections, or meticulously planning dream travel experiences, they channel their skills into meaningful endeavours that bring order and inspiration to their lives and others.

Success Strategies for Women with Conventional Traits
For business owners and executives, these organizational strengths can be instrumental in maintaining balance, creating efficiency, and building sustainable solutions. Here’s how to use your Conventional identity to your advantage and optimize for your next transition:

Master Operations - Your strength in managing systems has made you a champion for operational success. Whether you managing a team or improving workflows, your methodical approach has ensured nothing slips through the cracks.

  • How to optimize for your next transition: Remaster your life and work by embracing self-leadership Me-First Mindset

Lead with Consistency - Fostering reliability within your team has built a foundation of trust and security. Your co-workers have thrived under your leadership with stability of structure and consistency—hallmarks of the Conventional identity.

  • How to optimize for your next transition: Use your natural strengths to maintain a sense of consistency as you navigate new environments The Power of Consistency

Plan for Success - Your expertise in strategic planning complements your skill in risk management. Together, these strengths empower you to navigate transitions with precision, self-trust, and the trust of others.

Embracing Your Unique Identity
Being a Conventional organizer is just one part of your rich and multifaceted identity. You are far more than your job title or professional achievements. Your unique blend of experiences, values, and passions defines who you are at your core. By recognizing and embracing the strengths of your Conventional traits, you can confidently navigate life’s transitions and shape a fulfilling, purpose-driven journey beyond the corporate world.

Real-Life Inspiration from My Coaching Clients
Take the story of Sarah (pseudonym), a Director of Marketing for a successful communications and technology firm, where she leveraged her "C" strengths over two decades to streamline the company’s internal processes, reducing overhead costs consistently throughout her tenure, and making it easier for her co-workers to do their best work. Sarah brought clarity and safety to a high-stress work environment, ultimately positioning the firm for growth and recognition for her department and her co-workers.

How Sarah Harnessed Her Strengths After Leaving the Corporate World
In the first six months after stepping away from corporate life, Sarah focused on reshaping her life with purpose and intention. She began by decluttering and organizing her home, creating a space that reflected her new chapter. She also took the time to reassess her financial situation, carefully adjusting it to align with her evolving identity, lifestyle, and dreams.

Amid these efforts, Sarah found herself immersed in a journey down memory lane, with an appreciation for her network, and renewed interest in her ancestry. As she sorted through decades of photographs, she paused to savour the stories behind each image, reliving moments that brought her joy. These reflections sparked a bold idea: inspired by her memories, she reached out to a former colleague (a lost friend) to plan the ultimate travel itinerary.

Their mission? Explore and hike stunning destinations together every other month. The destinations included research into family roots. These adventures became a source of renewal, offering fresh experiences, meaningful connections, and treasured memories. Combining physical benefits, emotional support, and financial resources, Sarah and her friend transformed their dream into reality.
Thanks to the systems and routines Sarah had thoughtfully established, she was able to embrace these journeys trusting that she could be in charge of her destiny. Knowing her responsibilities at home were well-managed, she could fully immerse herself in the beauty of the present moment and the excitement of the adventures ahead.

Enhancing Your Self-leadership Journey with RIASEC - Practical Implementation of the RIASEC Model
The RIASEC framework doesn’t just tell you who you are—it helps you get where you want to be. Whether leveraging your Conventional strengths or exploring others, here are practical ways to incorporate RIASEC into your growth:

  • Perform a Self-Assessment - Reflect on how your RIASEC identity aligns with your career achievements and the moments where you felt the most joy in your work. What aspects of your current or past roles will you miss? How can you leverage your primary and secondary RIASEC strengths to seek out projects and activities that offer a similar level of fulfillment, excitement, and purpose?
  • Set SMARTER Goals - Set goals that leverage your natural Conventional strengths while pushing their boundaries to foster greater adaptability. Be sure to incorporate elements of excitement (E) and calculated risk (R). Now is not the time to settle for bland, uninspiring goals that simply maintain the status quo and leave you feeling stagnant—that was the promise of corporate life, and perhaps it delivered. But, now is your opportunity to spread your wings and design the life you’ve always dreamed of.
  • Include RIASEC in Engaging Others - Utilize the framework to gain deeper insights into effectively engaging others in your plans. Choose friends and collaborators whose RIASEC strengths align with your objectives—either to complement your skills for seamless collaboration or to address gaps, making it easier to achieve your goals with greater efficiency and grace.

Step into Self-Leadership for Transition
Your leadership journey is a continuous evolution. By cultivating self-leadership during times of transition, you have the opportunity to redefine and enhance the balance between your personal and professional life. The RIASEC model provides a valuable framework for this process. Leveraging your Conventional strengths, navigating change with resilience, and applying this proven guide can help you reshape your definition of success and create harmony as you remaster your life and work.

The Key to Reinvention and Remastering Life and Work
Reinvention and remastering your life and work requires an open mindset, a willingness to experiment, and the courage to redefine who you are outside of familiar patterns like stability and dependability. It’s important to give yourself permission to lean into uncertainty and accept some excitement and risk—it’s in these moments that your true potential emerges and grows beyond familiar boundaries. What do stability and dependability mean to you now? Is it a return to the comfort of the familiar or an opportunity to embrace your unique identity and spark new passions?

As you move forward, remember—you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Lean on the support of your network. Invest in a professional coaching program such as Executive Encore - Remastering Life and Work that offers guidance and inspiration during this next chapter. Above all, trust in yourself and the strength of your Conventional traits to approach this exciting chapter of life with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
